What Is an ICP Spectrometer?

A powerful analytical platform for rapid multi-element determination from trace to ultra-trace concentration levels.

An ICP Spectrometer uses a high-temperature Inductively Coupled Plasma source to excite or ionize elements in a sample. Depending on the detection system, the instrument measures either the light emitted by excited atoms and ions or the mass-to-charge ratio of ions generated in the plasma.

ICP techniques are widely used when laboratories need fast multi-element analysis, broad elemental coverage, high sensitivity and reliable quantification across environmental, industrial, pharmaceutical, food and research applications.

ICP-OES

Optical Emission Spectrometry

ICP-OES measures characteristic light emitted by excited atoms and ions. It is well suited to robust, high-throughput multi-element analysis across low-ppb to higher concentration ranges.

ICP-AES

Atomic Emission Spectrometry

ICP-AES is another commonly used name for plasma-based atomic emission analysis and is frequently used for quantitative elemental determination in laboratory and industrial workflows.

ICP-MS

Mass Spectrometry

ICP-MS converts sample elements into ions and separates them according to mass-to-charge ratio, enabling highly sensitive trace and ultra-trace elemental analysis.

ICP-OES or ICP-MS?

What Is the Difference Between ICP-OES and ICP-MS?

Both techniques provide multi-element analysis, but their detection systems, sensitivity and ideal applications differ.

Routine & Trace Analysis

ICP-OES

ICP-OES measures optical emission from atoms and ions excited in a high-temperature plasma. It is a strong choice for routine multi-element analysis, high sample throughput and applications covering low-ppb through higher concentration ranges.

  • Simultaneous multi-element capability
  • Fast routine analysis
  • Broad dynamic concentration range
  • Suitable for environmental and industrial QC
  • Robust performance for many sample matrices
Trace & Ultra-Trace Analysis

ICP-MS

ICP-MS measures ions according to mass-to-charge ratio. It provides substantially greater sensitivity and is preferred when laboratories need ultra-trace detection, isotope-related information or strong performance in demanding analytical applications.

  • ppt-level detection for many elements
  • Excellent trace and ultra-trace sensitivity
  • Broad elemental coverage
  • Collision/reaction cell interference control
  • Suitable for semiconductor and high-purity analysis

ICP Selection Guide

How to Choose an ICP Spectrometer

The right ICP system depends on the elements you need to measure, expected concentration range, matrix complexity and laboratory throughput.

01

Define the Elements

Identify target elements such as Pb, Cd, As, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Fe, rare-earth elements or other metals and trace species.

02

Define the Detection Range

ICP-OES is typically well suited to routine ppb–ppm workflows, while ICP-MS is preferred when ultra-trace ppt sensitivity is required.

03

Evaluate the Sample Matrix

Consider dissolved solids, acids, salts, organics and possible spectral or mass-spectrometric interferences.

04

Consider Throughput & Automation

Evaluate simultaneous analysis, autosampler requirements, software workflow and the number of samples processed per day.

ICP vs AAS

When Should You Choose ICP Instead of AAS?

ICP systems are especially valuable when the analytical workflow requires faster multi-element analysis and broader elemental coverage.

ICP FAQ

ICP Spectrometer Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ICP Spectrometer used for?
An ICP Spectrometer is used for qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis. It is commonly applied to metals, trace elements and elemental impurities in environmental, food, pharmaceutical, industrial, geological and research samples.
What is the difference between ICP-OES and ICP-MS?
ICP-OES measures optical emission from elements excited in the plasma, while ICP-MS measures ions according to their mass-to-charge ratio. ICP-MS generally provides lower detection limits and is especially useful for ultra-trace analysis.
Is ICP-OES the same as ICP-AES?
ICP-OES and ICP-AES refer to closely related terminology for inductively coupled plasma optical or atomic emission spectrometry. Both describe elemental analysis based on light emitted by atoms and ions excited in plasma.
What detection limits can ICP systems achieve?
Detection limits depend on the instrument, element, wavelength or isotope and sample matrix. ICP-OES commonly supports low-ppb analysis for many elements, while ICP-MS can reach ppt-level detection for many elemental applications.
What sample types can be analyzed by ICP?
ICP systems most commonly analyze liquid samples. Solid materials are typically converted into solution through digestion or another sample-preparation method before analysis, although specialized introduction techniques may also be used.
How are interferences controlled in ICP analysis?
ICP-OES can use wavelength selection, background correction and spectral-resolution techniques. ICP-MS may use collision or reaction cell technologies, kinetic energy discrimination and mathematical correction to reduce mass-spectrometric interferences.
Should I choose ICP-OES or ICP-MS for heavy metal analysis?
The choice depends on required detection limits, target elements, sample matrix and budget. ICP-OES is often suitable for routine multi-element analysis, while ICP-MS is preferred when ultra-trace heavy-metal detection is required.
Can AELAB recommend an ICP system for my application?
Yes. Provide the sample type, target elements, expected concentration range, required detection limits, testing standard and sample throughput so a suitable ICP-OES or ICP-MS configuration can be evaluated.
